Lavasa Women’s Drive the annual women’s car rally that celebrates the spirit of women saw over 2000 women compete to emerge winners and also support a social cause. Spirited women from Mumbai and Pune drove down to Lavasa, India’s first planned hill city on February 26, 2012 in cars displaying imaginative themes and messages supporting various causes like cancer prevention, saving a girl child, conserving tiger and many more.
The winners of the 4th edition of the rally were presented the Lavasa Women’s Drive Awards at a star studded ceremony at hotel ‘Intercontinental The Lalit’ in Mumbai. Awards were presented to the first ten winning teams from Mumbai and the first five winning teams from Pune who completed the race conducted in the Time-Distance-Speed format (TDS). Other awards like the best message, best dressed, most popular team and the most spirited team were also presented to the winning contestants.
The growing popularity of the rally among women and the support it has received for various social causes has led to the institution of a platform that honours contribution of women in driving seat, who excel in whatever they do. The first ‘Lavasa Women’s Drive – Women in the Driving Seat Awards’ saw a galaxy of women from diverse fields being recognized and honoured for their immense contribution in their respective fields of work while also benefiting society.
“The exemplary response to the fourth edition of the Lavasa Women’s Drive shows the emotional chord the initiative has struck with women. We plan to reach out to more women across India next year and the ‘Women in driving seat’ awards is one such initiative which will help us engage with a larger audience.”
All the winners spoke about how they overcame hardships and biases to be able to drive their destiny and make a contribution to society at large.
At the event Vidya Balan complimenting Lavasa for organizing the rally said “Lavasa Women’s Drive celebrates the spirit of fun, adventure among women while promoting cancer awareness among women. I dedicate the women in the driving seat award to all women, who are driving vehicles of their own lives. I am really honoured to be part of the platform created by Lavasa for spreading awareness on a highly relevant social cause.”
Bollywood actors Anil Kapoor, Kunal Khemu, Ali Zafar came to cheer the women and presented the awards to the winners.
