Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced the appointment of Gowton Achaibar as the head of its operation in India & Sri Lanka.
As Managing Director of Ericsson India Pvt. Ltd, Gowton brings extensive leadership and experience from the telecom industry to his new role. This will be extremely important as Ericsson aims to expand its business to provide mobile and broadband internet communications to the growing Indian telecom market.
In this position, Gowton will be responsible for maintaining and strengthening Ericsson’s leadership position within the market. As India moves toward 3G, it will be important that both the existing and new players within the market continue to leverage Ericsson’s global leadership as a telecommunications vendor. He will be responsible to ensure the company’s value proposition across its entire portfolio of products and Services are suitable for the market needs. This will be especially important as Ericsson continue to establish a broader portfolio that includes wireless, wireline, multi-media, optical, IPTV, etc.

Mr. Achaibar has a long history in the telecommunications industry. Prior to this appointment, he was the Executive Vice President and General Manager for the Ericsson Services business in North America. Before joining Ericsson, he was executive vice president of Business Development at AFL Telecommunications, a wireless network deployment services company. He was also the CTO of Powertel (a wireless carrier acquired by T-Mobile) and spent many years in wireline and wireless systems engineering at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
